Poetic and heartfelt songwriting that reflects observations on life, love and relationships best describe Karyn Black, the singer/songwriter born and raised in New England. Her music embraces an audience with an intimate feel, combining both emotional and lyrical depth with undertones of unexpected color, passion, humor, and tempo changes.
Karyn Black began songwriting and playing guitar in her teens and has worked professionally as a singer since the age of nineteen. A native of Newport, R.I, she grew up in a musical family touring all over New England in a singing and dancing act. A wide range of genres from pop, folk, country, bluegrass and musical theatre have influenced her songwriting. Karyn has toured the U.S.A. opening for Jose Feliciano on the West Coast, and in the U.K. opening for Rodney Crowell with other tours in Spain, Jamaica, Bermuda and Trinidad. Based in Nashville, she performs with a band or as a solo acoustic act and is often seen as a songwriter in music rounds at the renowned Bluebird Café, Listening Room, and Douglas Corner Café in Nashville.
Karyn signed to Acuff -Rose Publishing while living in London, and played the Borderline, Mean Fiddler and many of the underground clubs for emerging artists including the Half Moon, Kashmir Club, 12 Bar Club and The Garage.
Karyn secured a deal in 2001 with Southbound Records for distribution of her first album Beneath The Sheltering Sky, produced by Grammy nominated producer/songwriter Clay Mills of Nashville.
In 2004, Karyn signed with D’ EM Records in London to record her sophomore album Blinding, produced by James Sanger (programmer for Dido and Keane) in the U.K. and Mike Severs (The Rascals) of Nashville. This album combines folk/pop roots with “vibbey” contemporary beats. She has collaborated on dance tracks with film composer Stephen “Beanz” Rudden of the U.K. (Seal, Adamski, Love City Groove).
Karyn earned her M.A. from New York University in performing arts and has a music publishing company Karyn Black Music with B.M.I. She is a member of ASCAP, Nashville Songwriters Association International, The Grammy Recording Academy and lifetime member of Songwriters Guild of America.
